Education is Zambia’s Greatest Long-Term Investment, Says Minister Syakalima

Education Minister Douglas Syakalima has reaffirmed that education remains the most important investment any government can make, stressing its central role in driving national development and reducing poverty.

Speaking when a delegation from Royal Mukuni University College paid a courtesy call at his office, Mr Syakalima said no sector can thrive without a skilled and educated population.

“It is sad that people do not appreciate that when a government makes huge investments in education, it is setting a country on the path of development and prosperity,” he said.

He noted that education investments typically take at least 20 years to yield meaningful results, adding that many citizens often expect immediate outcomes.

The Minister cited several government interventions under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration aimed at strengthening the education sector. These include the introduction of free education for all learners, recruitment of teachers on a large scale, removal of examination fees, nationwide desk production, and the school feeding programme.

Mr Syakalima also said the Ministry of Education now oversees the full education continuum, from early childhood to tertiary level, to ensure better coordination and delivery of services.

He further emphasised that government is working to reshape mindsets and instil a stronger culture of learning among young people.

Meanwhile, Professor Joseph Mutale, Chairperson of the Royal Mukuni University Council, said the institution is ready for launch, pending certification from the Higher Education Authority.

He commended government reforms in the education sector, describing education as the most effective driver of national development.

Mr Syakalima encouraged the institution to consider establishing a Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality, noting its strategic location and alignment with Zambia’s economic priorities.
