Zambia and Japan Spark New Era of Cooperation in First Historic Visit in 42 Years

Zambia and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations following high-level talks held in Lusaka between Mulambo Haimbe and Motegi Toshimitsu.

The meeting, which took place on 30 April 2026, marked a significant diplomatic milestone as it represents the first visit by a Japanese Foreign Minister to Zambia in 42 years.

Mr Motegi’s one-day working visit is aimed at enhancing cooperation in key sectors, including energy, agriculture, mining and cultural exchange.

During the discussions, both ministers highlighted the importance of strengthening relations built on mutual respect and shared values.

Mr Haimbe highlighted Zambia’s strategic central location within Southern Africa, positioning the country as a gateway to regional markets.

He encouraged increased investment from Japanese private sector players, particularly in mineral exploration, transport corridors and value addition.

The Zambian minister also referenced the February 2025 visit to Japan by Hakainde Hichilema, as well as the participation of Vice-President W. K. Mutale-Nalumango at the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), as clear indications of growing cooperation between the two nations.

Zambia further expressed appreciation for Japan’s continued support through the Japan International Cooperation Agency, particularly in infrastructure development, education, mining and health, as well as assistance towards the country’s debt restructuring efforts.

In response, Mr Motegi commended Zambia’s ongoing economic reforms under President Hichilema’s administration and expressed confidence in the future of the partnership.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation stated that it remains committed to facilitating high-level engagements to strengthen bilateral ties and advance shared development priorities for the benefit of the Zambian people.
