President Ramaphosa Seeks Engagement with President Trump on Bilateral Issues
President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his intention to engage with U.S. President Donald Trump on key issues of bilateral interest, including South Africa’s land reform policy.
In a statement issued by the Presidency, Ramaphosa emphasized South Africa’s commitment to the rule of law, justice, and equality, clarifying that the government has not confiscated any land.
“The recently adopted Expropriation Act is not a confiscation instrument but a constitutionally mandated legal process ensuring equitable land access,” the statement read. The law, like similar legislation in other countries, balances public land usage needs with property rights protections.
South Africa views the United States as a strategic political and trade partner. The statement also clarified that aside from PEPFAR funding—which supports 17% of South Africa’s HIV/AIDS program—the country does not receive financial aid from the U.S.
Ramaphosa’s administration remains confident that discussions with the Trump administration will foster mutual understanding on land reform and other pressing bilateral matters.
