ZNS Commander Commends Medal-Winning Performances
The Zambia National Service (ZNS) is brimming with pride after its sponsored athletes secured a remarkable 10 medals at the recent 13th All Africa Games held in Accra, Ghana.
ZNS athletes, including Commonwealth 400m champion Staff Sergeant Muzala Samukonga, flyweight boxer Sergeant Patrick Chinyemba, and Sergeant Rhoda Njovu, delivered an outstanding performance.
The team secured an impressive haul of six gold and four silver medals across disciplines like 400m relay, judo, and boxing.
Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi, the ZNS Commander, expressed his elation at the exceptional display by the athletes, highlighting their contribution to national and ZNS pride.
In recognition of Sergeant Chinyemba’s exceptional feat of winning the flyweight boxing gold medal without throwing a single punch in the final, Lt. Gen. Solochi awarded him a promotion to the rank of Sergeant.
Lt. Gen. Solochi reaffirmed ZNS’s unwavering commitment to fostering the growth of various sports disciplines within Zambia. This commitment is evident in the financial and moral support provided to ZNS-sponsored athletes.
The Commander emphasized ZNS’s plan to explore further means of motivating athletes, including commensurate rewards for their achievements.
Recognizing the challenges faced by Zambia’s youth, Lt. Gen. Solochi highlighted ZNS’s continued use of sports to redirect the energies of young people towards positive and productive activities.
He emphasized the need to encourage youth to view sports not only as a recreational activity but also as a potential career path.
Lt. Gen. Solochi pledged ZNS’s commitment to forging stronger partnerships with key stakeholders like the Boxing Federation of Zambia, Athletics Zambia, and the Judo Association of Zambia. This collaboration aims to develop and promote sports across the country.
