DEC Seizes Large Sum of Malawian Kwacha at KKIA
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has successfully apprehended two foreign nationals, an American and a Russian, at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) for possession of a substantial amount of Malawian Kwacha.
This operation was carried out in collaboration with the Immigration Department and the Bank of Zambia, marking a meticulously coordinated effort.
The suspects were found attempting to transport MK 42,184,000.00 of Malawian Kwacha concealed in eight wooden boxes, destined for the United States via a specified airline. Further investigation led authorities to a hotel in Lusaka where additional currencies were seized:
- Maloti M102,600.00 (currency from Lesotho) and 24,300 coins
- Emalangeni (SZL) E 243,050.00 (currency from Eswatini) and 59,900 coins
- United States Dollars amounting to USD 33,883.00
- British Pound amounting to £200.00
- Turkish Lira amounting to ₺820.00
- Zimbabwean Zig amounting to 6,000.00
- Convertible Mark (Bosnia) BAM 30
- Congolese Franc 7
Additionally, items seized included a Toyota Hilux (registration number BBC 8613), car rental documents, two iPads, two iPhones, various documents, and passports belonging to the suspects.
Allan Tamba, Public Relations Officer for the DEC, emphasized the commission’s commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining Zambia’s integrity. “This operation sends a clear message that Zambia will not tolerate illegal activities,” stated Tamba. “We remain vigilant against those who seek to exploit our nation’s laws.”
The DEC continues its investigation to determine specific charges against the suspects involved in this significant seizure of illicit currencies.
