Zambia and Russia Set for Friendly Match to Mark Zambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary
Zambia’s football landscape is set to receive a boost with the proposed international friendly match between Zambia and Russia, aimed at celebrating Zambia’s 60 years of independence and fostering bilateral relations.
Russian Ambassador to Zambia, Azim Yarakhmedov, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming match, emphasizing its significance in commemorating six decades of friendship between the two nations.
He highlighted Zambia’s notable progress in football, particularly praising the achievements of the women’s national team and the Chipolopolo.
During a courtesy call on FAZ general secretary Reuben Kamanga, Yarakhmedov outlined plans for the friendly match and associated celebrations.
He revealed intentions to organize a musical concert featuring Russian and Zambian artists, with proceeds directed towards charity.
In response, Kamanga affirmed FAZ’s commitment to the initiative, assuring the Russian delegation of their cooperation in scheduling the match.
He mentioned the importance of aligning the dates with the FIFA window to ensure the participation of strong teams from both sides.
“We are happy with your visit, and we shall put it in writing and deliver our response before the close of this week,” Kamanga stated. “The friendly is settled, and what remains is just checking on the dates that will be good. This friendly will help celebrate the 60 years of friendship.”
Proposed dates for the match include September 2-10 or October 7-15, coinciding with Zambia’s Independence Day on October 24. Kamanga assured that FAZ would confirm the details in writing, expressing optimism about the success of the event.
