SADC Diplomats Unite in Washington to Drive Regional Economic Agenda

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary, Elias M. Magosi, has held a high-level engagement with SADC Ambassadors and Heads of Mission based in Washington, D.C., aimed at reinforcing regional coordination and advancing shared development priorities.

The courtesy meeting, held on 16 April 2026 on the margins of the 2026 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, brought together diplomatic representatives from SADC Member States to discuss progress and emerging challenges facing the region.

The engagement was hosted at the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa and chaired by South Africa in its capacity as the current Chair of SADC. Representing the Chair, Chargé d’Affaires Ismail Esau underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between the SADC Secretariat and Missions abroad.

Mr Esau noted that strong and consistent engagement is critical in advancing the region’s collective interests, particularly at a time marked by global economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and disruptions to energy and financial markets.

SADC, which comprises 16 Member States including Zambia, Angola, Botswana and Zimbabwe, continues to prioritise regional integration and economic resilience as part of its development agenda.

During the meeting, Mr Magosi briefed Ambassadors on progress in implementing SADC’s regional integration programmes, guided by decisions from the Council of Ministers and the Summit of Heads of State and Government. He highlighted ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation, strengthen economic resilience and accelerate initiatives that promote inclusive and sustainable development.

The Executive Secretary also presented key outcomes from the March 2026 Council Meeting, urging diplomats to engage their respective governments to ensure timely implementation of agreed actions.

Ambassadors welcomed the update and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Secretariat’s work. They emphasised the importance of coordinated diplomacy in enhancing SADC’s visibility and influence, particularly through engagement with international financial institutions, policymakers and development partners in Washington, D.C.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on how SADC Missions can further complement the Secretariat’s efforts to drive regional integration, inclusive growth and resilience amid an increasingly complex global environment.

Mr Magosi was accompanied by senior officials from the Secretariat, including Dr Mario Lironel, Senior Finance and Investment Officer; Mr Jagai Deedpchandsingh, Senior Programme Officer for Statistics; Dr Lamboly Kumboneki, Senior Programme Officer for HIV/AIDS; and Ms Barbara Lopi, Head of Communication and Public Relations.
