ZUPED Commends Vedanta Resources for Commitment to Social Responsibility
The Zambians for Peace Unity and Development (ZUPED) organization has extended accolades to Vedanta Resources for its unwavering support in enhancing the well-being of communities.
Ronnie Jere, President of ZUPED, expressed satisfaction and admiration for Vedanta’s consistent engagement in implementing social corporate responsibility initiatives.
Jere emphasized his confidence in Vedanta’s potential to significantly contribute to community development, especially in areas where it operates, upon assuming control of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).
“We at ZUPED are pleased and impressed with Vedanta Resources. This is an investor that has shown commitment to help communities in various sectors,” stated Jere.
He highlighted Vedanta’s recent donation of over 6,000 sanitary pads and detergents to schoolgirls in Chililabombwe as a commendable act.
Jere underscored the significance of Vedanta’s swift takeover of KCM operations, envisioning even greater community support once the investor assumes full responsibility. He emphasized the importance of investors prioritizing community welfare over profit-making.
“Vedanta has shown that it is ready to work with communities,” Jere noted, citing the company’s pledge of US$20 million annually for corporate social responsibility programs, as well as commitments to enhance working conditions and recapitalize KCM.
Jere lauded Vedanta’s multifaceted support across various sectors such as education, sports, and agriculture, emphasizing the positive impact on the nation.
He expressed optimism for expedited legal processes, particularly the creditors’ scheme of arrangement, to facilitate Vedanta’s complete assumption of KCM responsibilities.
