Maamba Energy, ZDA Provide Free Dental Screening to Over 600 Pupils
More than 600 pupils at Maamba Private School have benefited from a two-day dental outreach programme organised by Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) in partnership with the Dental Association of Zambia.
The initiative, held from 2 to 3 March 2026 in Maamba, focused on identifying and addressing oral health concerns that could affect learners’ well-being, school attendance and academic performance.
During the outreach, pupils ranging from pre-school to Form Two underwent professional dental screenings conducted by specialist dental surgeons drawn from Lusaka and Choma.
Speaking during the launch of the initiative, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Maamba Energy Limited, Lomthunzi Mbewe, said the programme forms part of the company’s broader commitment to improving community health.
“We have partnered with the Zambia Dental Association to provide access to specialist dental surgeons. Beyond screenings, we are providing every child with a free dental care pack including mouthwash, toothpaste and a toothbrush to ensure the message of oral hygiene reaches the home,” Ms Mbewe said.
The dental packs were distributed to learners in collaboration with Colgate Palmolive and Yash Life Sciences.
Ms Mbewe added that the programme builds on the success of a recent eye care camp conducted in the community, noting that the company’s focus is on preventive healthcare.
“Our focus is firmly on preventative care. By identifying issues early, we can educate children on the importance of oral hygiene before problems arise,” she said.
Meanwhile, President of the Dental Association of Zambia, Gabriel Mpundu, emphasised the importance of early intervention in promoting lifelong oral health habits.
“The ZDA has entered into this partnership with Maamba Energy Limited to conduct regular oral health checks for the community. Our objective is to see a nation with excellent oral hygiene, and MEL shares this vision for their area of operation,” Dr Mpundu said.
He added that engaging children at an early age helps establish a culture of regular dental check-ups and allows minor oral health issues to be addressed before they become serious.
Dr Mpundu also noted that parents were included in the awareness programme as they play a crucial role in supervising their children’s daily hygiene routines.
Also speaking during the event, Justina Nakaundi Kaonga expressed gratitude to parents and MEL for supporting the initiative, highlighting the link between good health and academic performance.
“A healthy child is more likely to pay attention and succeed academically. Seeing the children engage through songs and poems about dental care shows how receptive they are to this information,” she said.
She added that with the support of parents, the programme will help ensure pupils maintain good oral hygiene and enjoy better health outcomes.
The dental outreach forms part of the Corporate Social Responsibility programme of Maamba Energy Limited, which focuses on healthcare, education and sustainable community development in the region.
