Zambia Calls for Global Action on Inequality and Climate Threats at WSSD2
Zambia has reiterated its dedication to promoting social justice, equity and inclusive development at the United Nations Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2), held in Doha.
Speaking on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., delivered Zambia’s national statement during the high-level meeting.
In his remarks, he called for stronger global cooperation to tackle interconnected challenges including economic uncertainty, climate change, debt distress, inequality, unemployment and conflict, issues that continue to hinder progress on human development worldwide.
Hon. Haimbe expressed Zambia’s full support for the Doha Political Declaration, which renews the spirit of the Copenhagen Summit and reinforces the three core pillars of global social development: poverty eradication, productive employment and social inclusion.
The Minister highlighted Zambia’s domestic reforms aimed at uplifting vulnerable groups, guided by the Eighth National Development Plan. He noted progress on youth employment, rural poverty reduction, gender equality and climate resilience, aligned with Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
He added that the Social Cash Transfer Programme now reaches approximately 60 percent of the nation’s poorest households, providing critical income support to vulnerable families. Further reforms include free education from primary to secondary school, expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme, and strengthened child protection systems for children who make up nearly half of Zambia’s population.
Hon. Haimbe also reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to key African Union initiatives, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and the AU Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy.
He emphasised that these frameworks demonstrate Africa’s determination to shape its own development path and contribute to global governance.
The Minister concluded that Zambia continues to align national financing with social priorities, ensuring that economic growth leads to poverty reduction and decent work for all.
The statement was issued by Mrs. Eva Hatontola Chanda, Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, on 5th November 2025 in Doha.
