Govt Urges Copperbelt Energy Corporation to Expand Investment in Renewable Energy
The Zambian government has urged the Copperbelt Energy Corporation PLC (CEC) to ramp up its investments in renewable energy as a strategic move to mitigate future energy crises.
Currently, CEC operates two solar power plants with a combined output of 94 megawatts. In a forward-looking initiative, the company is already gearing up for the second phase of its Itimpi Solar Power Project, which is set to generate an additional 136 megawatts by the fourth quarter of 2025.
Speaking during a courtesy call on CEC Chief Executive Officer Owen Silavwe in Kitwe, Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati emphasized the critical role of renewable energy.
“Renewable energy sources present the best alternative to hydroelectricity, particularly as they are less vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change,” said Mutati.
He highlighted the ongoing energy crisis as a turning point, urging the country to diversify its energy sources and invest in sustainable electricity generation.
Minister Mutati also called on CEC to collaborate with the Ministry in preparing for the World Skills Africa Competition, scheduled to be held in Livingstone in April 2025.
He suggested that CEC support the electrical engineering category to mentor young Zambians who will represent the country in this continental event.
CEC Chief Executive Officer Owen Silavwe affirmed the company’s commitment to working with the government, including considering support for the World Skills Africa Competition.
Meanwhile, World Skills Zambia Project Manager Precious Lisulo announced that Zambian participants have been selected from the recent National Skills Competition.
She urged industry experts to collaborate with the Ministry to refine the skills of these youths, ensuring Zambia’s success in the upcoming competitions.
Lisulo also revealed that Zambian youths will compete in the World Skills Competition in Lyon, France, next month, using the event as a preparatory stage for the 2025 competition in Livingstone.
