Maamba Energy Launches 300 MW Phase II Power Plant Expansion, Strengthening Zambia’s Energy Security
Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) has officially commenced its 300 MW Phase II power plant expansion project, marking a significant milestone in Zambia’s energy sector. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on August 13, 2024, was presided over by President Hakainde Hichilema.
The expansion, which will double MEL’s current energy output to 600 MW, is scheduled for completion by mid-2026. This ambitious project is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing Zambia’s power deficit, which has been exacerbated by the country’s heavy reliance on hydroelectric power—a source increasingly strained by climate-induced water shortages.
During the ceremony, President Hichilema emphasized the importance of diversifying Zambia’s energy mix to ensure a stable and reliable power supply.
“This project symbolizes our relentless efforts in our journey for energy security in our country. We have an energy insecurity instigated by drought because we are a mono-energy economy, with over 80% of our energy coming from hydro. This project is critical in overcoming these challenges,” the President stated.
The expansion is also a testament to the strength of public-private partnerships in Zambia. Mr. Ashok Devineni, Chairman of Nava Limited—the 65% shareholder in MEL—highlighted the significance of collaboration in bringing the project to fruition.
“The launch of this project has become possible largely due to the support and encouragement from the government of Zambia. This project truly exemplifies the power of public-private partnership,” Mr. Devineni said.
The event also saw remarks from the Chairperson of ZCCM-IH, a 35% shareholder in MEL, who described the groundbreaking ceremony as a swift and decisive response to Zambia’s evolving power needs.
He noted that the project employs Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) technology, which ensures low emissions and a cleaner environment. “Maamba Energy has not only transformed the local environment in Sinazongwe but has also contributed significantly to diversifying Zambia’s energy mix,” he added.
In his address, President Hichilema outlined the government’s multi-faceted approach to addressing the power deficit, underscoring the importance of MEL’s Phase II expansion in stabilizing Zambia’s energy supply.
He noted that the additional power generated would help reduce load shedding, support key industries such as mining and manufacturing, and align with the government’s vision of increasing copper production and providing electricity to every citizen.
The expansion project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities during and after construction, further contributing to Zambia’s economic growth. MEL, with the support of the government, has secured significant financial backing from local institutions, anchored by NAPSA, ensuring that the project’s economic benefits remain within the country.
Lt. Col. Cyrus Minwalla (Retd), Chief Executive Officer of MEL, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all stakeholders involved in making the project a reality. He assured the community and traditional leaders of MEL’s continued commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable energy production.
Maamba Energy’s rebranding from Maamba Collieries Limited to Maamba Energy Limited reflects its broader vision and strategic focus on energy. With robust environmental clearances and a long-term Power Purchase Agreement with ZESCO, MEL is poised to play a key role in resolving Zambia’s energy crisis, promoting economic development, and improving the livelihoods of its citizens.
