US$2 Billion Ming’omba Mine Project Launched, Union Calls for Better Jobs
The Mineworkers Union of Zambia has welcomed the US$2 billion investment in the Ming’omba Mine project in Chililabombwe, describing it as a significant milestone for the country’s mining sector and a potential driver of economic transformation on the Copperbelt.
The groundbreaking ceremony for shaft construction at the Ming’omba Mine, being developed by Kobold, is among the major mining developments attracting attention in the region. Mineworkers Union President Joseph Chewe is among the invited delegates attending the event.
Reacting to the investment, Mr Chewe said the project represents a major boost for Zambia’s mining industry and has the potential to revitalise the Copperbelt, similar to the impact of large-scale investments in the North-Western Province.
He commended President Hakainde Hichilema for efforts in attracting major foreign investment, noting that such projects are crucial for job creation and regional economic growth.
However, Mr Chewe emphasised that the success of the investment must be measured not only by capital inflows but also by the quality of employment created. He called for competitive salaries and improved working conditions for employees at the new mine.
“If this is a world-class mine, then it must also offer world-class conditions for its workers,” he said, adding that the project should set a benchmark for other mining operations in the country.
The union leader further urged Government to ensure that Zambians benefit beyond employment by participating in ownership opportunities and the wider mining value chain, including supply contracts and business partnerships.
He cited examples from other countries, such as Ghana, where local participation in resource-linked industries has been strengthened through targeted empowerment initiatives.
Mr Chewe said greater support for local enterprises and entrepreneurs in the mining sector could help develop a stronger base of Zambian investors, ultimately contributing to long-term national economic growth.
