RTSA Introduces New Patrol Fleet and Dispatch Centre to Reduce Accidents

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has launched a modern fleet of highway patrol vehicles alongside a state-of-the-art Dispatch Centre, aimed at improving road safety enforcement, enhancing emergency response, and strengthening traffic monitoring across Zambia.

The development marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to modernise road safety management, with authorities stating that the investment will enable faster response to incidents and more effective enforcement of traffic regulations nationwide.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Transport and Logistics, Hon. Museba F. Tayali, said the initiative represents a strategic investment in protecting human life and strengthening national productivity.

He noted that modernising road safety systems goes beyond operational costs, describing it as an essential step in safeguarding citizens and supporting national development.

RTSA Board Chairperson, Mr Richard Chizyuka, revealed that the newly acquired fleet consists of 25 vehicles, including 13 high-rise Ford Rangers, eight Toyota Hilux vehicles, and four medium SUVs.

He said 21 of the vehicles will be deployed along major highways, while the remaining four SUVs equipped with intelligent monitoring and digital surveillance systems will enhance real-time oversight and compliance enforcement.

He added that the fleet was procured at a cost of K34.33 million, underscoring Government’s commitment to strengthening transport safety infrastructure and improving operational efficiency.

RTSA Director and Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Amon Mweemba, said the launch comes at a critical time amid rising road traffic accidents.

He explained that the new patrol units will be deployed in identified high-risk accident zones to improve visibility and response times along major roads.

Eng. Mweemba further noted that the patrol teams will operate 24 hours a day, in line with Zambia’s transition to a round-the-clock economy and the lifting of the night travel restrictions under Statutory Instrument No. 76 of 2016.

He said continuous enforcement will help reduce accidents and improve discipline among road users.
