Zambia Seeks EU Backing for Mining and Economic Growth Initiatives
Zambia’s Minister of Mines and Mineral Development, Hon. Paul Kabuswe, has called on the European Union (EU) to support Zambia’s mining sector and broader economic development.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting with EU International Partnership Commissioner Jozef Sikela in Brussels, Hon. Kabuswe emphasized Zambia’s political stability, adherence to the rule of law, and peaceful environment as essential elements for attracting European investors.
The Minister highlighted the mining sector’s remarkable $10 billion investment growth over the past three years. He praised the EU’s contributions to artisanal mining, particularly in addressing child labor issues and aiding government efforts to formalize the sector.
Key discussions included advancing the Lobito Corridor project, which aims to enhance regional trade and connectivity, and promoting skills development in the critical raw materials value chain. Hon. Kabuswe advocated for increased scholarships through existing academies to build capacity in this area.
Ms. Kusobile Kamwandi, Head of Zambia’s Presidential Delivery Unit, reiterated Zambia’s commitment to the Lobito Corridor initiative. She urged the EU to establish a Zambia Implementation Office for the corridor and accelerate other collaborative projects.
Commissioner Sikela reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to Zambia, highlighting plans to expedite the Zambia-Tanzania interconnector project to address the power deficit caused by drought.
He also recognized Zambia’s key role in the global green transition and pledged continued cooperation in the raw materials value chain.
