DMMU Clarifies FQM’s Role in Maize Transport
The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has issued a statement clarifying First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) involvement in transporting maize from Tanzania to Zambia.
Following widespread reports of a contract awarded to FQM for significant maize transportation, the DMMU emphasized that the mining company is only participating in a small-scale, voluntary effort to support the government’s response to the drought-induced food crisis.
Dr. Pollen, National Coordinator of the DMMU, explained that FQM has offered to transport 4,000 metric tonnes of maize – a minimal portion of the total maize imports needed.
The company will cover transportation costs of USD 500,000, using its returning copper anode export trucks to deliver the grain to Food Reserve Agency (FRA) storage depots in Kapiri Mposhi and other Copperbelt locations.
Dr. Pollen reaffirmed the DMMU’s commitment to collaborating with various stakeholders, including the private sector, to address the disaster’s impact.
He also announced the arrival of the first maize import shipment purchased by the Zambian government to alleviate food insecurity.
Expressing gratitude for FQM’s support, Dr. Pollen assured the public of the government’s dedication to ensuring national food security.
