Chinese Community Donates K390,000 to Olympic Hero Samukonga

The Zambia Chinese Association has announced a generous donation of over K390,000 to Muzala Samukonga, the Zambian athlete who won bronze in the 400m race at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The contribution comes in recognition of Samukonga’s outstanding achievement, which ended Zambia’s 27-year wait for an Olympic medal since Samuel Matete’s silver in the 1996 hurdles.

The association’s president, Zhang Jian, and executive president, Wu Ming, have pledged $10,000 and $5,000 respectively to the athlete.

Speaking to The Falcon, Wu Ming expressed the Chinese community’s pride in Samukonga’s accomplishment. “We believe that sports play a crucial role in national development and are excited about Muzala’s performance. He has not only represented Zambia but Africa as a whole,” he said.

The donation, amounting to $15,000, will be presented to Samukonga upon his return from Paris. The association hopes that this contribution will encourage more young people to pursue athletics and other sports.

Kinglong Motors, a member of the association, has a history of supporting Zambian sports, having previously donated a bus to the Shepolopolo women’s football team in 2022.
