Gov’t Backs Modern Farming to Improve Food Security and Farmers’ Incomes

The Minister of Agriculture, Reuben Mtolo, has praised innovative farming technologies being implemented at Akuna Matata Smart Farm, describing them as practical solutions capable of transforming Zambia’s agricultural sector and improving livelihoods.

Speaking after touring the facility, which is supported by Delthy Farm, Mr Mtolo said the technologies demonstrated at the farm have the potential to significantly increase productivity, improve efficiency, and strengthen food security if replicated across the country.

He noted that Zambia’s agricultural transformation agenda depends on the adoption of modern farming methods that equip farmers with improved tools, knowledge, and systems to raise yields while adapting to climate-related challenges.

According to the Minister, the innovations showcased at the smart farm demonstrate how technology can support small-scale, emerging, and commercial farmers alike by lowering production costs, improving irrigation systems, and enhancing crop management practices.

Mr Mtolo reaffirmed government’s commitment to promoting mechanisation, climate-smart agriculture, smart irrigation technologies, and stronger private sector partnerships aimed at modernising the sector.

He added that expanding such initiatives to other provinces and districts would help improve production of key crops such as maize, wheat, and soya beans, contributing to national food security and economic growth.

The Minister further encouraged increased investment in agricultural innovation and technology, stressing that collaboration between government and the private sector is essential for unlocking Zambia’s full agricultural potential.

During the tour, Mr Mtolo visited various sections of the farm and interacted with stakeholders who showcased advanced farming systems designed to improve efficiency, sustainability, and resilience within the agricultural sector.
