Zambia Celebrates Founding Father’s Centenary, President Vows to Continue Legacy

Zambians across the nation commemorated the 100th birthday of their beloved founding president, Kenneth Kaunda, today on 28th April 2024. 

President Hakainde Hichilema led the celebrations at Lubwa Mission in Chinsali, Kaunda’s birthplace.

“KK,” as Kaunda was affectionately known, is revered as a global icon for his unwavering dedication to liberation movements across Africa and beyond. 

President Hichilema paid tribute to Kaunda’s legacy, highlighting his commitment to education, a cornerstone of Kaunda’s vision. 

The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to free education, a policy he called dear to Kaunda’s heart.

Unity was another central theme of the commemoration. President Hichilema emphasized that President Kaunda championed national unity, believing that Zambia’s strength lies in its people standing together. 

He called for continued peace and unity as the nation strives to reach its full potential.

The ceremony also saw President Hichilema and other dignitaries lay wreaths at the resting place of Kaunda’s parents in Chinsali. 

This act symbolized respect for the family of the nation’s founding father.

The commemoration concluded with a powerful message of unity from President Hichilema. 

He reiterated the national motto: “One Zambia, One Nation, One People.” 

The President closed the ceremony with a blessing for Zambia, asking for continued peace and prosperity.
