Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu Reflects on Dr. Kenneth Kaunda’s Centenary, Expresses Concern Over Nation’s Challenges
Former President Edgar Lungu delivered a stirring speech in a poignant address commemorating the centenary celebration of Zambia’s founding father, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda. Expressing deep concern over the state of the nation, Lungu invoked the legacy of the revered leader.
Speaking in a live national address aired on Dr. Kaunda’s centenary, President Lungu lamented the perceived anguish that Dr. Kaunda would feel witnessing Zambia’s struggles with poverty, human rights abuses, and a deteriorating rule of law.
“Dr. Kaunda is weeping from his grave today when he sees the country he helped found face abject poverty and wanton abuse of human rights,” remarked Dr. Lungu.
The former President underscored the indispensable role Dr. Kaunda played in shaping Zambia’s history, highlighting his efforts in job and national wealth creation, as well as his unifying vision that transcended the country’s diverse tribal landscape.
“He united the 73 tribes of Zambia and taught us that Zambia was just one nation through his doctrine of ‘One Zambia, One Nation,'” President Lungu affirmed.
Dr. Lungu also praised Dr. Kaunda’s initiatives such as the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) and Industrial Development Corporation (INDECO), which he credited with laying the foundation for national wealth creation.
Additionally, President Lungu commended Dr. Kaunda’s commitment to democratic principles, citing his decision to step down in 1991 amidst calls for multi-party democracy to avoid conflict.
On the geopolitical front, Dr. Lungu hailed Dr. Kaunda’s unwavering stance against apartheid in South Africa and oppression across Africa and beyond.
Looking forward, President Lungu urged Zambians to emulate Dr. Kaunda’s legacy and strive for progress. However, he expressed concern over ongoing challenges such as the rising cost of staple foods and fuel, which he said are exacerbating poverty levels in the country.
Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, born at Lubwa Mission in Chinsali on April 28th, 1924, and passing away on June 17th, 2021, would have turned 100 years old this week.
He governed Zambia from 1964 to 1991, overseeing the transition from a one-party state to a multi-party democracy.
