The Mulungushi Conference Center in Lusaka witnessed the commemoration of the Zambia Institute of Secretaries Day, with Thabo Kawana, the Information and Media Permanent Secretary, representing the Minister of Information and Media, Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa, MP at the event.

Key highlights from the commemoration include the government’s acknowledgment of the vital role that Secretaries play in organizations, emphasizing their contribution to smooth and effective operations, even amidst turbulent situations.

The evolving role of Secretaries, now referred to as Office Managers, Personal Assistants, and Management Assistants, underscores the increased responsibility and demand for innovation within the profession.

Mr. Kawana, in his address, urged Secretaries to uphold professionalism in their duties, recognizing their essential role in enhancing efficiency in institutional operations.

He emphasized the government’s expectation for employers to recognize and appreciate the efforts of Secretaries, acknowledging their significant contributions.

Furthermore, Mr. Kawana congratulated the Secretarial fraternity on the successful enactment of a Bill, now law, leading to the establishment of the Zambia Institute of Secretaries.

The bill, assented into an Act of Parliament No. 19 of 2022 by President Hakainde Hichilema on December 6th, 2022, signifies a pivotal regulatory tool aimed at enhancing integrity and professionalism among Secretarial staff in Zambia.

The Professional Secretaries Association of Zambia (PSAZ) has been officially renamed the Zambia Institute of Secretaries (ZIS), signaling a new era of regulation and improved standards within the profession.

The Minister urged Secretaries across the country to reflect on their individual contributions and become ambassadors of their institutions.

This year’s commemoration, held under the theme “Professional Secretary – Enhancing Professionalism and Attaining Recognition in the Workplace,” underscores the Institute’s commitment to promoting professionalism and recognition for Secretaries across various sectors.
