Kazungula Unveils €12M Water Project to Power Investment and Growth
Kazungula has officially launched a €12 million water project aimed at transforming the district’s socio-economic landscape and strengthening its role as a strategic trade and investment hub in the Southern African region.
Funded by the SADC Water Fund in collaboration with the German Government, KFW, and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), the new water facility was handed over to the Southern Water and Sanitation Company (SWASCO) during a ceremony officiated by Minister of Water and Sanitation, Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu. The Government of the Republic of Zambia also contributed 10% of the project cost.
The facility is expected to provide safe, clean water to over 20,000 residents, as well as serve the bustling transit population moving through the quadripoint district, which borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.
Kazungula Town Council has hailed the project as a “game-changing foundation” for investment, tourism, agriculture, and infrastructure growth. “This is not just a facility—it’s a promise of progress and a cornerstone of our vision for integrated development,” said Lwando Kalonga, Public Relations Officer at the Council.
The water plant is also set to unlock agricultural potential by enabling large-scale irrigation and agro-processing, while providing the critical infrastructure needed to attract hotels, eco-lodges, and other tourism ventures near the Zambezi River, Chobe National Park, and Victoria Falls.
Minister Nzovu highlighted the project as a key enabler of national development and a testament to government’s commitment to service delivery. Traditional leadership, including Chief Sekute, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of water in improving lives and livelihoods.
Kazungula Town Council reaffirmed its readiness to use the facility as a launchpad for attracting private sector investment and enhancing regional competitiveness, with long-term goals of becoming a model district in sustainable development.
