Nsanshi Art Empowers Young Women Through Jewelry Design and Manufacturing
In a bright and bustling workshop, a new generation of artisans is taking shape. Thirteen young women, the latest apprentices at Nsanshi Art, are transforming discarded copper into beautiful jewelry and other handcrafted items. This innovative program is not just about creating unique products, it’s about empowering women and building a brighter future.
Nsanshi Art, launched in 2020 by First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi Foundation, is more than just a training program. It provides young women with the skills and resources to become self-reliant entrepreneurs. The two-year program equips them with jewelry design, metalworking techniques, financial literacy, and computer skills.
Lucy Kashipo, a graduate of the first Nsanshi Art class, exemplifies the program’s success. Initially intimidated by the equipment and unsure of her abilities, Lucy persevered. Today, she’s a full-time employee, crafting intricate designs and even training new students. Lucy’s dream is to open her own workshop, a testament to the program’s lasting impact.
Nsanshi Art sources its copper from scraps and offcuts from the nearby Kansanshi mine. These raw materials are transformed into a variety of products, from simple bangles to intricate earrings and pendants. The program also incorporates leatherwork, with belts and other handcrafted accessories adding another dimension to their offerings.
Nsanshi Art’s commitment to quality and innovation is evident in their recent achievements. They’ve become a member of the Jewellery and Gemstone Association of Africa, opening doors to international customers. Their work has even been featured in a prestigious Milan fashion exhibition, and a collection is slated to be showcased in London.
