Ministry of Education Affirms Commitment to International Mobility of Higher Education Qualifications
Zambia’s Cabinet has given approval for the ratification of the revised Addis convention on the recognition of studies, certificates, diplomas, degrees, and other academic qualifications in higher education in African states.
The decision, endorsed on January 26th, 2024, reaffirms Zambia’s commitment to international cooperation in promoting the mobility of qualifications in higher education.
Mr. Joel Kamoko, the Permanent Secretary of Education Services at the Ministry of Education, announced the Cabinet’s approval during a consultative meeting on the Zambia Qualifications Authority Bill (ZAQA), 2024.
He emphasized that this move signifies the government’s dedication to implementing robust quality assurance mechanisms in higher education, ensuring the recognition of Zambian qualifications both regionally and internationally.
The ratification of the Addis convention, initially signed by Zambia in 2019, underscores the nation’s role in fostering international collaboration and enabling the global mobility of academic qualifications.
The convention is a crucial instrument in promoting the exchange of knowledge, building global networks, and fostering innovative thinking among participants.
Addressing stakeholders at the consultative meeting, Mr. Kamoko urged collective consensus on the provisions of the ZAQA Bill, 2024. He emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement to support the bill when presented to parliament for enactment.
The ZAQA bill had previously received unanimous approval during an internal legislation meeting chaired by the Minister of Justice in June 2022. Although it was not considered at the second reading, Mr. Kamoko expressed optimism for its successful enactment in the future.
