APNAC Urges Prioritization of Corruption Cases in Proposed Live Court Broadcasts
The African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC) Zambia Chapter, led by Chairman Miles Sampa, has welcomed Chief Justice Mumba Malila’s announcement that the judiciary is considering broadcasting live court cases of public interest. APNAC has called for a focus on prioritizing corruption cases within this initiative.
APNAC Zambia Chapter emphasized the significance of prioritizing corruption cases in the proposed live broadcast of court proceedings. Many Zambians have expressed frustration over the handling of corruption cases, citing delays and perceived lack of transparency.
The organization believes that broadcasting corruption cases live will provide the public with real-time information on court proceedings, fostering transparency, and boosting confidence in the judicial system. Transparency is viewed as a crucial element in the fight against corruption.
The organization expressed its full support for live broadcasts of court proceedings, especially in cases related to corruption and money laundering investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).
The organization believes that live broadcasts will enhance public understanding of how such cases are handled and the reasons behind any delays in their conclusion. This, in turn, is expected to strengthen public trust in the judiciary’s handling of corruption cases.
APNAC Zambia highlighted the need to expedite pending corruption cases and secure convictions, particularly involving public officials and politicians. Zambia’s low corruption conviction rate for politicians is a matter of concern, with some cases taking up to five years to conclude.
Live court broadcasts should prioritize cases involving politicians charged with corruption to serve as a deterrent for current and future government officials and civil servants. APNAC believes that addressing corruption is crucial for the nation’s development and preventing the misappropriation of public funds.
APNAC Zambia Chapter’s stance aligns with the goal of promoting good governance and combating corruption. They emphasize the importance of expediting corruption cases, especially those involving government and municipal finances, to address a long-standing issue in Zambia.
By prioritizing transparency and accountability in the handling of corruption cases, APNAC aims to contribute to a more just and corruption-free society in Zambia.
