Zambia Signs Key Agreement with GGGI to Accelerate Inclusive Green Growth
The Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) has signed a Host Country Agreement (HCA) with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), marking a significant step towards strengthening cooperation on climate action and inclusive green growth.
The agreement was signed during the GGGI Spring Annual Meeting by Zambia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, H.E. Andrew Banda, accompanied by First Secretary Ms. Anastasia Muuka, and the Executive Director of GGGI, Mr. Sanghyup Kim.
The HCA formally establishes GGGI’s legal status in Zambia and reinforces the institutional framework for collaboration between the two parties. It is expected to enhance the Government of Zambia’s capacity to implement its climate and green growth priorities, including commitments under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Speaking at the signing ceremony, H.E. Ambassador Andrew Banda described the agreement as both a commitment and a call to action, emphasising the importance of effective implementation and strong stakeholder collaboration.
“This agreement is not only a commitment but a call to action. Its success will depend on effective implementation and strong collaboration among all stakeholders. Zambia stands ready to work closely with GGGI to ensure tangible results that improve the lives of our people,” he said.
GGGI Executive Director Mr. Sanghyup Kim highlighted the importance of the partnership in advancing Zambia’s transition towards a low-carbon and inclusive economy.
“GGGI recognises that advancing Zambia’s climate priorities is essential to building an inclusive, sustainable economy. This partnership is an opportunity to accelerate green growth, deliver country-led solutions, and support Zambia’s transition to a low-carbon economy,” he said.
Since 2022, GGGI has been working closely with Zambia, which became a Member State in July 2023. The organisation has supported various initiatives in collaboration with government institutions, including the development of a National Green Growth Index, the National Green Growth Strategy, and frameworks for carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Other areas of support include the operationalisation of an integrated Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (iMRV) system, capacity building across key institutions, and the establishment of a Climate Finance Unit to improve access to green financing.
The newly signed agreement is expected to further strengthen joint planning and implementation of green growth programmes, while enhancing Zambia’s capacity to mobilise climate and sustainable finance.
GGGI’s operations in Zambia are hosted under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment.
