Govt Denies Reports of Police Surrounding Archbishop Residence
The Zambian government has swiftly dismissed rumors circulating on social media alleging that police have surrounded the residence of Emeritus Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu.
Thabo Kawana, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Media, refuted the claims, stating that there has been no police presence at Archbishop Mpundu’s home at any point.
The government categorically denies any accusations of harassment or intimidation directed at Archbishop Mpundu based on his opinions or statements.
Mr. Kawana emphasized that any purported link between the Archbishop’s recent remarks concerning President Hakainde Hichilema and the alleged police presence is purely speculative and unfounded.
He reiterated that Archbishop Mpundu has the right to express his opinions freely.
In light of these developments, the government has urged the public and media organizations to exercise caution and verify information before dissemination.
Mr. Kawana stressed the importance of refraining from spreading false or sensationalized news that could unnecessarily alarm the public.
Furthermore, Kawana reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting individuals’ freedoms of expression.
He emphasized that Zambia remains a country where differing viewpoints are encouraged and protected under the law.
