Ministers Verify GMO Mealie Meal Documentation at Kazungula Border Post
The Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson, Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa, MP, and Defence Minister, Hon. Ambrose Lufuma, MP, recently conducted a thorough verification exercise at the Kazungula Border Post.
The focal point of this exercise was to scrutinize the documentation process of imported Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) mealie meal destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Multiple stakeholders are actively monitoring the importation process of mealie meal by the Zambia National Service (ZNS) from South Africa, bound for the Democratic Republic of Congo. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to transparency and accountability in the importation process.
Hon. Mweetwa stressed the absence of arrests related to disseminating falsehoods about the matter, highlighting the government’s commitment to non-interference in police operations. This emphasizes the importance of allowing due processes to unfold independently, reinforcing the rule of law.
Reiterating that the importation of GMO mealie meal from South Africa adheres to legal protocols, Hon. Mweetwa sought to address any concerns regarding the legality and safety of the imported food commodity. This assurance aims to clarify the government’s commitment to upholding legal standards.
Defence Minister, Hon. Ambrose Lufuma, underscored the selection of the Zambia National Service (ZNS) for the task due to its reputation for trustworthiness and discipline in carrying out assignments. This strategic choice reflects a commitment to reliability and integrity in the execution of the importation process.
Addressing the increased demand for locally produced mealie meal being smuggled into neighbouring countries, Hon. Lufuma explained the decision to import the commodity for business purposes. This move seeks to balance the local and international demand for the staple food, aligning with economic considerations.
Minister Lufuma reassured the nation that locally-offloaded mealie meal is GMO-free, dispelling fears raised by certain quarters. This categorical assurance aims to quell concerns regarding the safety of the food supply and aligns with the government’s commitment to public health.
