FQM & Hitachi Unveil the World’s Largest Battery-Powered Mining Truck

First Quantum Minerals (FQM), in partnership with Hitachi Construction Machinery, has commissioned what is being described as the world’s first ultra-large battery electric mining truck at the Kansanshi copper and gold mine, marking a major milestone in the global shift towards low-emission mining.

The all-electric Hitachi EH4000 truck, integrated with advanced battery technology and trolley-assist systems, has been introduced as part of efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and accelerate the decarbonisation of heavy mining haulage operations.

The initiative positions Zambia at the forefront of sustainable mining innovation, leveraging the country’s predominantly hydro-powered electricity grid to support cleaner industrial operations.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Dr Hapenga Kabeta described the project as a significant step in Zambia’s development agenda, emphasising that partnerships of this nature reflect the future of responsible mining.

He said environmental stewardship remained critical in addressing climate change, adding that First Quantum Minerals demonstrated strong alignment with the “three Ps” of sustainable development: profit, people and the planet.

He also noted the company’s high local employment levels, with approximately 96 per cent of its workforce being Zambian.

First Quantum Minerals Chief Executive Officer Tristan Pascall said the project demonstrated what could be achieved when industry, government and technology partners collaborate effectively.

He added that the initiative followed years of research and development, building on a long-standing partnership with Hitachi that began in 2012 with trolley-enabled systems.

Mr Pascall further said the adoption of battery electric haulage technology would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving operational efficiency, particularly in the context of rising global fuel costs. He also highlighted Zambia’s renewable energy advantage as a key enabler of the transition.

Hitachi Mining Business Unit Vice President Ray Kitic said the success of the project was driven by strong infrastructure, scale, and commitment from partners to deliver meaningful change.

He noted that Zambia’s high share of hydroelectric power made it an ideal location to demonstrate real-world decarbonisation across mining operations.

FQM says the commissioning of the BEV truck reflects the potential of strategic partnerships and enabling policy environments to drive technological innovation, while delivering both economic and environmental benefits.
