FAO Boosts Zambia’s Environmental Capacity with ICT Equipment Handover
The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment in Zambia received a significant technological boost as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) officially handed over Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) equipment.
The ceremony, held on January 19, 2024, marked a crucial step in strengthening the capacity of the ministry for sustainable environmental management.
Honorable Eng. Collins Nzovu, Member of Parliament and Minister of Green Economy and Environment, presided over the event, expressing gratitude for FAO’s longstanding technical and financial support in the realm of sustainable environmental and natural resources management.
The ceremony took place at the SADC Headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana.
The ICT equipment, valued at $100,000 and provided through the Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) from 2021 to 2023, is geared towards facilitating enhanced environmental tracking, surveillance, ecosystem restoration program development, and increased environmental research.
The computers are equipped with geo-spatial analysis software to enhance ecosystem analysis in the country and improve national reporting capabilities.
In his remarks, Minister Collins Nzovu emphasized the transformative impact of this support on data collection, mapping, ecosystem analysis, environmental surveillance, research, and reporting within the ministry.
He expressed gratitude for FAO’s continued collaboration on various initiatives and projects, including those focusing on sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation.
Ms. Suze Percy Filippini, FAO Country Representative, highlighted the organization’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s environmental goals.
She underlined the importance of the technical cooperation project and the collaboration between FAO and the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, showcasing FAO’s dedication to building technical capacities in environmental management.
The ceremony demonstrated the ongoing collaboration between FAO and the Zambian government, aligning with the country’s vision for green growth, adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable management of natural resources and environmental services.
As Zambia continues to strive for sound environmental management, this technological support is expected to significantly contribute to the achievement of these goals.
