Huawei Advocates for Accelerating Digital Africa at AfricaCom 2023
Huawei, a global leader in information and communications technology, took center stage at AfricaCom 2023, Africa’s largest tech conference, to emphasize the crucial role of digitalization and decarbonization in propelling the continent towards a prosperous and sustainable future.
In his opening keynote, Leo Chen, President of Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa, outlined how the convergence of digital and physical realms could be harnessed to leapfrog development in the digital economy era.
President Chen stressed the imperative need for Africa to prioritize the acceleration of connectivity infrastructure, citing it as the foundation for secure, reliable, and advanced networks.
To address this, President Chen highlighted Huawei’s commitment to providing leading-edge connectivity technology, including 4G, 5G, and 5G-Advanced solutions.
He emphasized the importance of future-proof infrastructure that supports emerging applications in smart industries and homes, making connectivity more inclusive and accessible across the continent.
President Chen also underscored the significance of embracing cloud technology, urging African countries to establish national cloud data centers.
These centers, according to President Chen, would drive innovation ecosystems and enhance operational efficiency, ultimately providing citizens with one-stop and innovative services.
Furthermore, President Chen discussed the role of digital technologies in driving decarbonization.
He noted that the ICT industry, including Huawei, could significantly reduce global carbon emissions and enhance digital energy production efficiency.
President Chen presented examples of Huawei’s contributions to clean energy projects, such as the Scatec ground PV plant in Africa, which improved energy yield and operational efficiency.
Huawei’s commitment to cultivating digital talent was also emphasized, with President Chen stating that the company had trained 100,000 digital talents in Sub-Saharan Africa over the past five years, with plans to train another 100,000 by 2025.
He concluded by stating that as a key participant and sponsor at AfricaCom, Huawei is ready to work with all parties to accelerate digital Africa, creating a prosperous and sustainable continent.
At the conference, Huawei showcased its latest technologies and solutions in a 350-meter exhibition space and supported and organized several forums, including the African Ministerial Forum for a Future-Oriented Digital Infrastructure, Africa Fibre Forum 2023, Africa Operations Transformation Forum 2023, and the Africa 5G Summit.
