Airtel Invests K12 Million in Schools, with First Project Set for Chipata Launch

The Minister of Education, Hon. Douglas Syakalima, has commended Airtel Zambia for its continued investment in the education sector, describing the company’s contributions as vital to Zambia’s development and digital future.

The Minister made the remarks when Airtel Zambia Managing Director, Mr Hussam Baday, paid a courtesy call at his office in Lusaka.

Hon. Syakalima said Airtel’s support comes at a critical time when access to technology is becoming increasingly important in the education system. He noted that under the revised curriculum, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now a compulsory subject, making reliable internet connectivity essential for effective learning.

He emphasised that early exposure to digital tools is key to preparing learners for a rapidly evolving global environment, adding that expanding connectivity in schools will help bridge the digital divide and promote equal access to quality education.

“Airtel’s involvement in the education sector is critical in ensuring that learners across the country are equipped with the necessary digital skills,” he said.

In response, Mr Baday reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting national development through strategic investments in education and digital infrastructure.

He revealed that Airtel has invested K12 million in the construction and refurbishment of five schools across five districts. The first school is expected to be commissioned in Chipata, Eastern Province, with additional schools in Mongu, Solwezi, Mufulira and Kasama scheduled for completion within the next three months.

Mr Baday further disclosed that Airtel has already connected 300 schools to the internet and aims to expand connectivity to 3,000 schools over the next three years.

He said the initiative is part of the company’s broader mission to transform lives through improved connectivity, strengthen education infrastructure, and support innovation among young people.

The meeting was also attended by Airtel’s Legal Director, Ms Suzuyo Akatama, and Head of Corporate Communications, Government Relations and CSR, Ms Suwilanji Siame.
