FAZ Requests CAF Flexibility Over Zambia’s Second Continental Slot

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has formally engaged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the allocation of Zambia’s second continental slot in CAF competitions.

FAZ has requested a waiver of the rule that requires the winner of a national cup competition to represent the Member Association in the CAF Confederation Cup, while the association aligns its domestic competition with CAF standards.

Acting FAZ General Secretary, Iva Lengwe, explained that the request follows feedback from local clubs regarding timing and format challenges in the ABSA Cup.

“We have listened to our clubs and agree that the current timing and format present genuine challenges. FAZ has responsibly engaged CAF to explain our situation and request that our context be considered,” Lengwe said.

He added that the ABSA Cup, in its current form, does not yet fully achieve national inclusivity across all provinces and tiers of Zambian football.

“Our goal is to ensure the team representing Zambia does so on merit, competitiveness and fairness during this transitional period,” he said.

FAZ confirmed that updates will be shared with members once CAF responds to the request.
