Zambia to be Represented by Foreign Affairs Minister at 80th UN General Assembly
President Hakainde Hichilema will be represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, running from 9 to 30 September 2025.
The high-level week will begin on 22 September, with Hon. Haimbe scheduled to deliver Zambia’s national statement during the General Debate on Monday, 29 September. This year’s debate will focus on the theme: “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”
Joining the delegation will be the Minister of Health, Hon. Elijah Muchima, M.P., with Zambia set to take part in several key meetings. These include the High-Level Meeting to Commemorate the UN’s 80th Anniversary on 22 September, the Climate Summit on 24 September, and the First Biennial Summit for a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Global Economy, also on 24 September. The latter summit, mandated by the Pact for the Future in 2024, will focus on aligning multilateral and financial systems with shared development goals.
On the sidelines of UNGA, Zambia will host a Breakfast Roundtable on the Borrowers Forum, as well as the event “From Commitment to Action – Accelerating FFD4 Implementation,” aimed at operationalising the Sevilla Commitments and setting implementation priorities for the year ahead. The delegation will also convene a private sector roundtable in New York to highlight investment opportunities in Zambia.
In addition, the Zambian delegation is expected to participate in a series of high-level side events organised by international partners, covering priority areas such as health, digital transformation, and climate change. Bilateral meetings with other world leaders are also planned to advance issues of mutual interest.
According to a statement issued by Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Zambia’s participation at UNGA80 underscores government’s commitment to tackling shared global challenges, strengthening multilateralism, and advancing the nation’s development agenda on the international stage.
