Zambian Govt Calls for Accurate Production Reporting and Improved Housing for Mine Workers

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has urged mining companies to comply with regulatory requirements and accurately declare production figures to reflect Zambia’s true copper output.

During an ongoing tour of mines in Kasempa District, North-Western Province, Mines Permanent Secretary Dr Hapenga Kabeta expressed concern that underreporting by some operators could be masking the country’s actual copper production.

He directed the Mine Safety Department to strictly enforce penalties against non-compliant firms and ensure adherence to mining safety regulations.

Dr Kabeta also highlighted the unsafe and outdated practice of housing mine workers in hostels within mining areas, which contravenes regulations prohibiting residential construction in such zones. He noted that one company is currently accommodating over 600 employees on site, describing the situation as demeaning and disruptive to family life.

“The practice of housing workers in hostels is unacceptable. Mining companies must invest in permanent housing and collaborate with private developers to create sustainable townships with schools, clinics and other amenities,” Dr Kabeta said.

He instructed non-compliant firms to secure land from local councils to develop decent housing, health facilities and social services that will endure beyond the life of the mines.

Dr Kabeta further encouraged mining firms to support homeownership for employees through favourable terms, ensuring long-term benefits for workers and surrounding communities even after mine closures.

Meanwhile, Katokamema Mines Chief Operations Officer Busiku Keembe disclosed that the mine has invested $50 million and produced 14,000 tonnes of copper ore in its first two months of operation. The company has also allocated 15% of its shares to local chiefs and the community, underscoring its commitment to shared prosperity.
