ERB Approves ZMW 3.9B Energy Investment Boost

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has granted approval for 43 new energy licences and six construction permits—totaling ZMW 3.9 billion (approximately US$159 million) in investment commitments—across the petroleum, electricity, and renewable energy sectors.

The approved licences cover a broad spectrum of energy activities including manufacturing, supply, installation, and maintenance of renewable energy systems; distribution, importation, and export of petroleum products and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG); and the blending, packaging, distribution, and export of lubricants. Licences were also issued for new electricity generation ventures.

These developments aim to enhance energy availability, promote cleaner technologies, and ensure a dependable energy supply across the country.

Two major construction permits were approved for large-scale solar power projects: Fitula Solar Company Limited will build a 12 MWdc solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Chingola at an estimated cost of US$11.5 million, while Garneton South Solar Limited is set to develop a 20 MWac solar PV plant in Kitwe, representing an investment of US$22.9 million.

To support petroleum logistics, the ERB also licensed 85 new road tank vehicles aimed at safe and efficient transportation of petroleum products. Additionally, six new service stations were authorized to commence operations, further strengthening access and service delivery nationwide.

Namukold Kasumpa, Manager of Public Relations at ERB issued the statement, emphasising the board’s dedication to creating a transparent, predictable, and favorable regulatory environment that encourages investment in sustainable energy aligned with Zambia’s national development goals and energy transition priorities.

These approvals herald a significant advance in Zambia’s energy sector, providing scalable infrastructure, reinforcing the shift to renewables, and supporting broader economic growth.
