Zambia Advances Clean Energy Ambitions at Global Energy Summit in London

Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to clean energy and sustainable development at the high-level Summit on the Future of Energy Security currently underway in London.

Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote is leading the Zambian delegation at the two-day global event, jointly convened by the United Kingdom and the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The summit brings together ministers, investors, policy experts, and energy stakeholders to strengthen international collaboration in response to emerging challenges in the energy sector, including digitalisation, climate change, and the rise of renewable energy technologies.

Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Minister Chikote emphasized Zambia’s progress in energy reforms and its ambition to attract international investment into its energy sector. The Minister also participated in a strategic roundtable breakfast with the UK Foreign Secretary and the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, where discussions centred on partnerships to accelerate clean energy deployment.

In a key bilateral engagement, Minister Chikote held talks with the Head of the UK International Energy Unit. Discussions focused on Zambia’s potential membership in the Global Clean Energy Alliance (GCEA), a UK-led initiative launched at the 2024 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro to foster clean energy partnerships between developed and developing countries.

The summit takes place amid growing global urgency to enhance energy resilience. According to the IEA, clean energy sources—including renewables and nuclear—accounted for over 80% of the increase in global electricity generation last year. Investments in clean energy reached nearly $2 trillion in the same period, underscoring the global shift toward sustainable energy systems.

Zambia’s active participation at the summit highlights its strategic intent to secure a cleaner, resilient, and more secure energy future.

This is according to a press statement issued by Speedwell Mupuchi, First Secretary Press at the Zambian High Commission in London.
