12 Kenyan University Students Qualify for Global ICT Competition
Twelve university students from Kenya have secured a spot in the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition 2024-2025, set to take place in South Africa this April. The competition aims to nurture ICT talent, bridge the digital skills gap, and provide participants with hands-on learning experiences, networking opportunities, and potential job placements.
The 12 students, selected from various universities across Kenya, were unveiled on Monday by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba in the presence of education stakeholders and Huawei officials. CS Ogamba encouraged more students, including those from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, to take advantage of such opportunities.
“There are no universities in remote areas where we cannot reach, so we encourage all students across the universities and even the TVETS to participate in this program,” said CS Ogamba. “Without ICT and an understanding of the digital economy, it is difficult to meet industry demands. ICT knowledge and skills are now essential for success.”
One of the standout participants, Rukia Mwari Mohammed from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), shared her journey in the competition. She first attempted to join in 2023 but lacked the necessary skills. Determined to improve, she spent a year training as an instructor at her university. When the competition was re-advertised, she reapplied and qualified.
The competition is open to students from all universities and can be accessed using mobile devices, making it inclusive and widely accessible. The qualified students hail from JKUAT, Africa Nazarene University, University of Nairobi, Machakos University, Mount Kenya University, Kenya Methodist University, Egerton University, The Cooperative University of Kenya, and Moi University.
The students are now gearing up to represent Kenya on the global stage, showcasing their ICT expertise and competing against top talents from around the world.
