SADC to Convene Extraordinary Summit on Regional Security in Harare
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is set to hold an Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on November 20, 2024, in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The summit will focus on reviewing the security situation in the region, particularly the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Chaired by His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of Zimbabwe and current Chairperson of SADC, the summit will receive a detailed update on the progress of the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC).
The SAMIDRC was deployed in December 2023 with a one-year mandate to stabilize the region and restore peace, security, and stability, laying the foundation for long-term development in the DRC.
The Extraordinary Summit will follow the SADC Organ Troika Summit, which will be chaired by H.E Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and representative of Tanzanian President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. The Troika Summit will focus on politics, defense, and security cooperation, key areas of regional concern.
Before the main summit, SADC senior officials, the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defense, and Security Cooperation, as well as the SADC Council and Council of Ministers, will convene to discuss critical security matters.
