Ethiopian Airlines to Buy Six More Boeing 787-9 Jets

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed the conversion of six options for Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into firm orders, reinforcing its long-haul expansion strategy and fleet modernisation drive.

The announcement, made jointly with Boeing on 21 April 2026, marks a key milestone in the airline’s ongoing growth plan following its landmark 2023 order.

The additional aircraft will support the expansion of Ethiopian Airlines’ intercontinental network from Addis Ababa while also increasing cargo capacity to meet rising global demand.

Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew described the move as a significant achievement for the airline. “Converting the options of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes into a firm order is truly a proud moment for us,” he said, noting that the acquisition reflects the airline’s sustainable growth ambitions and commitment to operational excellence and passenger comfort.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates Africa’s largest fleet of 787 Dreamliners, deploying both the 787-8 and 787-9 models on high-demand routes linking Addis Ababa to destinations across Europe, Asia, North America and within Africa.

Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, said the continued partnership highlights the aircraft’s importance to the airline’s growth.
“We’re proud that Ethiopian Airlines continues to look to the 787 Dreamliner as the backbone of its fleet as it expands operations and opens new routes,” he said.

The 787 Dreamliner is known for its fuel efficiency and operational flexibility, enabling airlines to operate long-haul routes more efficiently while also accommodating cargo in the aircraft’s lower hold for high-demand trade corridors.

Ethiopian Airlines Group remains one of the fastest-growing airline brands globally, serving more than 145 international destinations with a fleet of over 170 modern aircraft. A member of Star Alliance, the airline has also been recognised by Skytrax as the ‘Best Airline in Africa’ for eight consecutive years.
