Govt Releases K68.5 Million for Cash for Work Program to Address Drought Impact
The Zambian government has released K68.5 million through the Treasury to support the Cash for Work Program, aimed at helping citizens affected by the recent drought.
Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane announced that the initiative is focused on providing financial relief to vulnerable but capable citizens by involving them in labour-intensive community projects.
“The Cash for Work Program is targeted at putting money in the pockets of viable but vulnerable citizens, while engaging them in meaningful work that benefits their communities,” Dr. Musokotwane said.
The release of funds is part of a broader K15.3 billion allocation for public service delivery and developmental programs in August 2024.
The government has reserved K2 billion in the revised 2024 Budget specifically for the Cash for Work Program, which aims to alleviate the income challenges caused by the drought.
In addition to the Cash for Work initiative, Dr. Musokotwane revealed that K5.4 billion was allocated to arrears and debt service, while K5.2 billion was used for the public service wage bill.
Another K808.8 million went toward capital expenditure, and K1.3 billion was designated for transfers and social benefits.
Dr. Musokotwane also announced that the 2025 National Budget will be presented on Friday, September 27, 2024.
