Husqvarna Expert Highlights Winter Pruning as Key to Healthier, Stronger Gardens

Gardening experts are encouraging homeowners and horticulture professionals to embrace winter pruning as an essential practice for improving plant health, structure, and long-term productivity.

In a detailed guide shared by Husqvarna, Brad Barthorpe, Sales Manager for Distributors Africa, explained that pruning is both an art and a science that goes beyond simple trimming, playing a critical role in shaping plant growth and resilience.

“Pruning is less about taking away and more about helping plants reach their full potential,” Barthorpe said, noting that correct cutting techniques help redirect plant energy towards stronger, healthier growth.

He explained that winter, when many plants are dormant, is an ideal period for structural pruning because it reduces stress on plants while allowing for more controlled regrowth in the warmer months.

Barthorpe outlined several key benefits of proper pruning, including improved growth, reduced risk of disease through better air circulation, increased flowering and fruit production, stronger plant structure, and improved light penetration to inner branches.

He also highlighted that different seasons require different pruning approaches, with winter best suited for structural work, spring for post-flowering maintenance, summer for shaping and growth control, and autumn for minimal trimming to avoid frost damage.

The guide further stresses safety and technique, including the importance of using clean, sharp tools and appropriate personal protective equipment.

Barthorpe advised gardeners to taper hedges for better light distribution, use pole saws for high branches, and apply the three-cut method when dealing with large limbs to prevent bark damage.

However, he warned against common mistakes such as “topping” trees, over-pruning, cutting too close to growth nodes, or using dirty tools, all of which can weaken plants and increase disease risk.

“Mastering the art of pruning is about knowing what to cut, when to cut, and where to cut,” Barthorpe said, adding that proper techniques lead to healthier, better-shaped gardens that thrive over time.

The company says its range of professional pruning equipment is designed to support both homeowners and professionals in achieving precise, safe and efficient garden maintenance.
