Zambia and AfDB Cement Longstanding Ties with Launch of Permanent Country Office in Lusaka
Zambia and the African Development Bank (AFDB) celebrated the stone laying ceremony for the Bank’s Permanent Country Office in Lusaka, a move hailed as a major step in deepening their over 50-year partnership.
The ceremony was graced by AFDB Vice President Ms. Nnenna Nwabufo, Zambia’s Minister of Finance and National Planning Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, senior government officials, diplomats, and development partners. It marks a culmination of development cooperation dating back to 1971.
Dr. Musokotwane praised the AFDB’s unwavering support to Zambia, citing cumulative investments of approximately US$2.7 billion across key sectors such as transport, agriculture, water and sanitation, and energy.
“This is not just a ceremonial event—it is a vote of confidence in our country and our people,” he said.
Flagship projects funded through the partnership include the Kazungula Bridge, the Lusaka Sanitation Programme, and the Integrated Small Towns Water and Sanitation Project, among others.
The Finance Minister underscored that the permanent presence of the AFDB signifies growing trust in Zambia’s governance and its development trajectory under President Hakainde Hichilema. He urged for greater collaboration between the Bank and national implementing bodies to ensure project efficiency and impact.
Dr. Musokotwane also highlighted the urgent need for climate resilience support in light of the 2023/2024 drought, which has severely affected food security in Zambia and neighboring countries.
As Zambia pursues its Vision 2030 agenda to become a prosperous middle-income nation, the government reaffirmed its dedication to working with the AFDB not only on financing but also in policy dialogue, technical capacity, and innovation.
In closing, the Minister extended appreciation to AFDB shareholders, development partners, and stakeholders for their continued commitment to Zambia’s development journey.
