Mining Pollution Threatens Health and Future of Zambia, Warns Expert

Concerns over mining pollution in Zambia continue to mount as experts warn of severe health risks and economic instability due to environmental hazards. Economic analyst Kelvin Chisanga has raised alarm over the harmful chemicals being discharged into the country’s water bodies by mining stakeholders, calling for urgent regulatory intervention.

“The mining sector once promised economic growth, job creation, and increased revenue. However, with current stakeholders failing to adhere to environmental standards, we are witnessing a dangerous trend of pollution,” Chisanga stated.

He emphasized that Zambia’s mining industry has long operated without a proper regulatory framework, which has contributed to weak environmental governance. “The failure to establish a robust regulatory body to oversee mining affairs has left our environment vulnerable,” he said.

The impact of mining pollution is becoming more dire, especially in the wake of the historical 2024 drought, which has already strained the region’s freshwater resources.

Mr. Chisanga stressed that polluting water sources with mining waste is a reckless act that demands immediate accountability from industry leaders and policymakers.

“Water is a fundamental resource for industries, households, and wildlife. Ensuring water resilience should not be seen as just an environmental issue, but as a cornerstone of economic stability and business continuity,” he noted.

Mr. Chisanga urged the Ministry of Mines to implement internationally recognized mining standards, free from individual self-interests. He called for responsible leadership to protect Zambia’s natural resources and align mining practices with sustainable development goals.
