Nampundwe Mine: A Key Asset in KCM’s Business Strategy, Says COO

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Chief Operating Officer (COO) Malcolm Mewett has emphasized the critical role of Nampundwe Mine in the company’s profitability, stating that without its pyrite production, KCM’s operations cannot be sustainable.

Speaking at the internal relaunch of operations at the mine last week, Mewett highlighted the need to modernize and grow the mine to optimize its output.

“Nampundwe is vital for the production of pyrite, a key component required to operate the Nchanga Smelter. Without pyrite, our smelter can’t run, and without the smelter, KCM cannot be profitable or viable. Over the next 12 months, we will focus on modernizing the mine and maximizing the orebody’s potential,” Mewett said.

Mewett also encouraged Nampundwe Mine management to explore expanding pyrite’s supply chain beyond Zambia, targeting African markets. “Rather than just supplying the Nchanga Smelter, we should aim to provide pyrite to other smelters across Africa,” he stated.

With the relaunch of operations, the COO emphasized safety, urging employees to prioritize safety amid increased pressure to meet targets. “I want everyone, including business partners and KCM employees, to care for and respect one another. Don’t put yourselves at risk if a job is not safe,” Mewett advised.

He further expressed gratitude to the workforce and unions for their support during KCM’s challenging liquidation and court process, voicing optimism for the company’s future.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Manish Saxena also echoed Mewett’s sentiments, encouraging employees to collaborate toward achieving production targets.

“Our goal is to produce 243,000 tonnes of pyrite for the 2025 financial year. I am confident that with teamwork, we can reach this milestone and rewrite KCM’s legacy even better than before,” Saxena remarked.

Union representative Martha Phiri lauded the reopening as a testament to collaboration and determination. “As we move forward, we recommit to constructive dialogue and mutual respect to build a brighter future for KCM and its stakeholders,” she said.
