President Hichilema Commends Reformed Church in Zambia on 125th Anniversary

President Hakainde Hichilema joined thousands in celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Reformed Church in Zambia at the Lusaka Showgrounds today.

The Reformed Church, one of the nation’s largest, has witnessed tremendous growth, expanding its membership from 20,000 to 800,000 since its humble beginnings under a tree in 1899.

In his address, President Hichilema praised the church for its significant contributions to Zambian society, highlighting its establishment of hospitals, schools, and other social infrastructure that complement government efforts.

“This demonstrates that the church and government are not competitors but complementary entities, serving the same communities,” he stated.

The President called upon the church to collaborate in combating drought and building resilience against future challenges.

He emphasized the importance of water harvesting, irrigation, and alternative energies such as solar power. “By participating in these efforts, we can work together to address these issues and better prepare for the future,” he urged.

President Hichilema paid tribute to the church’s founders, including the late Reverend C. M. Cronje, Reverend Hofmeyer, and the first Zambian ordained minister, Reverend Justo Mwale. He acknowledged their legacy of dedication and service, which continues to be felt across the country.

“We urge all Zambians to emulate the humility and great works of these founders, who have left a lasting impact on our nation,” President Hichilema said. He also praised the youths who participated in the celebrations, noting their demonstration of love and wisdom as evidence of the church’s enduring influence.

“May we continue to build on this legacy, fostering a brighter future for our nation built on the platform of love, unity, and mutual respect,” he concluded.

The President congratulated the Reformed Church in Zambia for its monumental achievement, celebrating its long-standing commitment to preaching the gospel and serving the Zambian community.
