Zambia to Construct 520 Communication Towers to Boost Connectivity Nationwide
The Zambian government, in collaboration with the private sector, has announced plans to construct 520 new communication towers across the country by the end of 2025.
This initiative targets achieving a 96 percent coverage of phone and internet services nationwide.
The announcement was made by Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati during the commissioning of a communication tower in Itezhi-Tezhi. Of the total towers planned, the government will spearhead the construction of 340 towers, while the private sector will undertake the remaining 180 towers.
This expansion will increase the total number of communication towers in Zambia to 900 once all are operational.
Minister Mutati highlighted that the new towers are essential for improving access to government services online, such as the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) and Social Cash Transfer, particularly in remote areas.
Additionally, existing 2G networks in some locations, including Itezhi-Tezhi, will be upgraded to 4G to ensure faster internet connectivity.
Moreover, in a gesture of community support, Minister Mutati announced the donation of 10 computers to Kabanga Primary School to facilitate ICT education for students.
The Ministry of Technology and Science is also collaborating with Members of Parliament nationwide to identify areas in need of improved phone services.
Chief Chilyabufu of the Ila people expressed gratitude for the connectivity efforts, acknowledging the government’s role in connecting his chiefdom to the phone network.
He urged further development efforts, particularly in improving local road infrastructure, citing their current deplorable state.
