Footballer Luke Fleurs Killed in Johannesburg Hijacking

South African football is in mourning after the Kaizer Chiefs confirmed the passing of defender Luke Fleurs. The 24-year-old was tragically shot dead during a carjacking incident on Wednesday night. 

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, Fleurs was waiting for service at a petrol station in Florida, Johannesburg, when he was approached by unknown gunmen. 

They ordered him out of his vehicle before shooting him once in the upper body. One of the suspects then fled the scene with Fleurs’ car. 

The Kaizer Chiefs released a statement expressing their deep sadness over the “tragic” loss. They confirmed that police are investigating the incident and promised further communication as details emerge. 

Fleurs, a highly regarded defender known for his technical skills and elegance on the pitch, joined the Kaizer Chiefs last year. He previously played for SuperSport United.  

Local media reports indicate he began his professional career at the Ubuntu Cape Town Academy in 2013. 

The news of Fleurs’ passing has sent shockwaves through the South African football community.
