Government Addresses Fluctuating Mealie Meal Prices in Nakonde District
The Acting Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Hon. Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, MP, delivered a comprehensive response in Parliament today regarding the issue of fluctuating mealie meal prices in Nakonde District.
Government acknowledges the fluctuating prices of mealie meal in Nakonde District, recognizing the challenges it poses to household food security.
To address this issue, interventions have been put in place to facilitate access to affordable mealie meal, particularly through enhanced distribution of mealie meal produced by the Zambia Correctional Service and Zambia National Service. Mealie meal from these institutions is currently available at designated retail places for K230.
Despite efforts to make mealie meal accessible, some traders capitalize on brand preferences and profit motives, leading to the commodity being sold at prices higher than average. This challenge is compounded by Nakonde’s status as a border town, where higher demand from neighboring countries influences price fluctuations.
To ensure citizens have access to affordable mealie meal, the government has implemented several measures. These include the introduction of community sales and wider distribution of mealie meal produced by the Zambia Correctional Service and Zambia National Service.
Additionally, commercial agreements have been extended to retailers such as Zambeef Products PLC and local traders by the Zambia National Service, aimed at improving access to mealie meal.
The average price of mealie meal in Nakonde ranges from K230 to K350 per 25kg, with the lowest recorded price being K200 per 25kg as of January 29th, 2024. This price range reflects the ongoing efforts to stabilize prices and ensure affordability for the citizens of Nakonde.
In conclusion, the government’s response underscores its commitment to addressing food security challenges and ensuring access to affordable mealie meal for citizens. By implementing targeted interventions and fostering partnerships with key stakeholders, the government aims to mitigate the impact of fluctuating prices and safeguard the welfare of its people.
