ZNBC Urged to Bridge Gap Between Propaganda and Truth

The Ministry of Information and Media, led by Minister Cornelius Mweetwa, has called on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) to play a crucial role in bridging the gap between propaganda and accurate information.

Mweetwa expressed the government’s concern over the increasing tendency of some citizens engaging in propaganda related to governance and government operations.

During a courtesy call by the ZNBC Board, chaired by Bishop Joseph Kazhila, Minister Mweetwa emphasized the importance of ZNBC being a reliable platform that informs the nation based on truth and facts.

He urged the corporation to rise to the challenge and counter misinformation.

“Feeding a nation on a diet of misinformation distorts people’s understanding and participation in the governance of the country,” stated Mr. Mweetwa, highlighting the negative impact of propaganda on citizens’ choices and decisions regarding their government.

Mweetwa specifically mentioned the heightened propaganda circulating about GMO mealie meal being fed to citizens, emphasizing that such misinformation is contrary to the truth on the ground.

In addition to countering propaganda, the Information Minister called on ZNBC to invest more in investigative journalism.

He stressed the pivotal role of the media in shaping the state of a nation’s governance, stating that how the media is managed leads the agenda of both progress and regress.
